The India-UK Free Trade Agreement Modi and Starmer are eager to restart talks on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Britain and India will restart negotiations on a free trade agreement (FTA), following a months-long hiatus due to elections in both nations.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office confirmed the development on Monday. According to Starmer’s office, the UK aims to build a "new strategic partnership" with India, focusing on deeper cooperation in key areas such as security, education, technology, and climate change. "A new trade deal with India will support jobs and prosperity in the UK," Starmer said.
Trade between the two nations has been growing steadily, with the total value of trade between India and the UK reaching £42 billion ($53.2 billion) in the 12 months ending June 2023. British exports to India alone were valued at £16.
6 billion during this period. As the world’s fifth- and sixth-largest economies, both countries see the free trade deal as a significant step in further expanding bilateral trade. The negotiations for an FTA had previously been delayed due to the general elections in India and the UK.
However, the talks have not been without challenges. Key sticking points in the past have included India’s steep import duties on British whiskey, which have hindered the free flow of British goods into the Indian market. India, on the other hand, has called for greater access to the UK’s visa system for Indian students and business professionals, a point that remains a subject of ongoing discussion.
Modi at G20 Summit Further, PM Modi announced plans to open two new Indian Consulates General in the UK, in Belfast and Manchester, to better serve the growing Indian diaspora in the country. On the first day of the G20 Summit, PM Modi also met with leaders from several countries, including France, Italy, Norway, Portugal, and Indonesia. During a session focused on social programs, he took the opportunity to speak on India's ongoing efforts to combat poverty and hunger.
Modi expressed support for Brazil's proposal to establish a global alliance aimed at addressing these critical issues. (With inputs from agencies) (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel ).
