India is becoming the second-largest market for OpenAI , where the company saw its user base triple, and the country should do everything in the artificial intelligence (AI) space, Sam Altman, Chief Executive Officer of OpenAI, said. Speaking at a fireside chat with Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, he said, “India, for OpenAI in particular, is our second-biggest market, where we tripled users last year. People in India are building with AI at all levels of the stack—chips, models.
.. all of the incredible applications.
So I think India should be doing everything,” Altman said. Talking about the cost of foundational models and his last statement on the subject, Altman said one of the most exciting things that has happened since then is that the world has now made incredible progress with distillation. “We learned a lot about building small models, and these reasonably sized models, in particular, cannot be cheap.
It’s still expensive to train them, but it’s doable, and I think that’s going to lead to an explosion of really great creativity...
India should be a leader there, of course,” he said. On the other hand, the cost of a given unit of intelligence seems to fall by about 10x every year, he said. “But what’s happening with the reduction in cost and AI models is extraordinary.
Now, something that means the world is going to require less hard work because you bring the cost down, but not necessarily the total number of dollars. But that’s a really exciting development,” he added. Talking about India’s AI foundational models, Vaishnaw said that a lot of things are happening.
“We have been using multiple AI applications across various departments and wings of the government. And I think that can really help us solve population-scale problems, because most of the challenges we face involve billions of people, which is very common. So, how do we solve these population-scale problems?” he said.
For this, Vaishnaw also invited the entire startup community to come up with unique solutions and said that very soon, the government will start an open competition for it.” Comments.
