India as an international ally that the world turns to, even if the country is 'bashful' at times, said External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Sunday. Speaking at an event in Delhi, the EAM stressed on the fact that India is a first-responder when its counterparts around the world need its help. However, he added, that New Delhi has miles to go to revamp itself from the mistakes of the past, in order to become a ' multigenerational foreign policy following nation'.
'We're a player the world turns to, even if we're bashful at times. The idea of India as a first responder, I can predict, will only get stronger," said Jaishankar. 'Era of being in a defensive crouch behind us' The External Affairs Minister noted that India has had its fair-share of hiccups in the past few decades, but that New Delhi is working towards coming out of those.
On India being in a sort of 'defensive crouch', the EAM admitted that the era of that perception is behind the country. Further, Jaishankar discussed the past dynamics of India and shed light on the things that could have been done differently.
According to the EAM, India's 'disrupted connectivity' was a result of the colonial times that need upgradation. "We inherited the disrupted connectivity of colonial times, in recent decades, yes, we have not made efforts to resurrect pre colonial connectivity. For India the world will be different in terms of connectivity, because a lot of it (connectivity) will be linked to India," said the EAM.
'NRIs will only increase in the future' On Indians working abroad, Dr Jaishankar put forward some numbers, He said that about 17-18 million Indians were at present working the world over, away from home. He expressed confidence in NRIs and predicted that this number is sure to only surge. "Indians working abroad have seen a significant rise and I can assure you these numbers will only go up in the future," said Jaishankar.
