India now accounts for half of all global online transactions, said Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa, on the opening day of the Rising Bharat Summit 2025. He credited fast digital payments and innovation as key drivers of this shift. “India leads the world in fast payments,” Kant said.

“We handle 50% of global digital transactions. China comes next with 20%.” He highlighted India’s rapid economic rise.

“A decade ago, we were part of the fragile five economies. Today, we are among the top five,” he noted. Kant also pointed to growth in infrastructure and technology.

“India has made remarkable progress in building physical and digital infrastructure,” he said. On the start-up ecosystem, Kant said India’s tech sector has seen a major shift. “We had only 156 start-ups a few years ago.

Now there are over 1,61,000, with more than 100 unicorns,” he added. He praised Indian start-ups for their work in Artificial Intelligence and healthcare, calling it “path-breaking.” The summit, hosted by News18, brings together policymakers, business leaders, and innovators to discuss India’s development trajectory.
