Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) are under attack these days, seemingly in fashion as many universities, businesses and politicians are removing DEI from their commitments, considerations and understanding. Why is it that what was once an important initiative in our society has fallen into such a state of ill repute and criticism? The University of Alberta has ditched DEI from its policies and replaced it with some brand called “access, community and belonging.” Alberta government policies clearly emphasize their repudiation of DEI principles, as they seem to be indoctrinated by Trumpism.
Those abandoning the tenants of DEI erroneously take the position that it is taking away from meritocracy and discriminating against those in the “white” population. U.S.
President Donald Trump suggested that DEI was to blame for a recent plane crash, under the impression that the air traffic controllers were not white or male. The American government is withholding financial support to selected universities if they continue with their DEI programs and are bullying the legal profession into unconscionable positions. What is behind this rash of indictments against DEI? I was always of the view that diversity was a positive vision for a country, and that it was a cornerstone in the history and creation of the blending of peoples and an integral part of our culture.
I was always of the view that equality was a positive vision for all our citizens, who are entitled to an equal playing field in the conduct of their lives. I was always of the view that inclusion was a vision that brought citizens together in creating a cohesive and dynamic society. I am still of the view that the visions embodied in DEI are significant and contain value systems that are worthy, and that must receive our unqualified support.
In my view, DEI has become the victim of the extremes. On the ideological, so-called progressive left, advocates have overreached and misinterpreted the scope of DEI, and have demanded unreasonable interpretations and actions under the umbrella of DEI. On the ideological right, advocates governed by racist attitudes envisioning a world governed predominantly by white male Christians have exerted their influences to demean radicalized communities and women.
And yet the majority of our citizens who support DEI are caught in the middle, as the positive aspects of DEI are drowned out in the media by its response to the blaring shouts of the extremes by both the left and right advocates..
