The Miami Dolphins perplex me. Of all 32 teams in the National Football League, I'm not sure there's one I'm more confused by than the Dolphins at the moment. Miami is stuck in no man's land.
There's really no other way to put it. They have too much talent to bottom out, too much money on the books to tank, and not enough pieces to truly contend. GM Chris Grier has one foot in and one foot out.
As a result, I'm not sure there's another team in a worse position for the future than the Dolphins right now. According to the latest reports from around the league, Miami has mutually agreed to explore trade options with seven-time Pro Bowl CB Jalen Ramsey . The expectation is for Ramsey to have a new team in the 2025 season despite signing a contract extension with Miami before the 2024 season and being signed through 2028.
The #Dolphins and seven-time Pro Bowl CB Jalen Ramsey are mutually set to explore trade options and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he played elsewhere in 2025, per me and @TomPelissero . Miami and Ramsey, due $25.1M fully guaranteed this season, could be parting ways.
pic.twitter.com/rfbNDcNL6m Dolphins refuse to rebuild Grier insists that the Dolphins are not rebuilding in a post-Ramsey world, but that seems a lot easier said than done.
Tyreek Hill has not seemed happy all offseason , alluding to a possible trade request multiple times on social media over the course of the offseason. "That is not anything that we're pursuing. Who knows? If someone wants to come and give me two first-round picks, we'll consider it," said Grier about trading Hill on Tuesday.
But even with Hill on the roster, the Dolphins seem destined for mediocrity in 2025 once again. They gave Tua Tagovailoa a $212 million contract. They still have intriguing offensive pieces like Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and De'Von Achane.
The defense still consists of Zach Sieler, Bradley Chubb, and Jordyn Brooks among others and yet...
There's enough there to get you out of bed on a Sunday morning, and with the help of Mike McDaniel, maybe the ceiling for Miami is higher than I'm giving them credit for. But the Dolphins don't seem to be improved at all from last season..
.That's a problem. This organization has made a habit of letting homegrown talent walk for the sake of investing in more proven veterans.
Robert Hunt, Christian Wilkins, Andrew Van Ginkel, Brandon Jones, and most recently Jevon Holland. All departed in free agency while Ramsey and Hill got contract extensions to stay in Miami. Talk about buyer's remorse.
I'm not sure I have an answer for what the Dolphins should do. But the worst direction is having no direction at all. Whatever the answer is, it's definitely not going to be easy to achieve or quickly attainable.
Miami hasn't won a playoff game in 25 years and from where I'm sitting right now, I'd say it's going to be a while before they break that streak. This article first appeared on A to Z Sports and was syndicated with permission..
