A biker who defied doctor’s wildest hopes for recovery has described himself as “a walking miracle”

Ben Bray, 46, sustained nine bleeds on his brain after he was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle on London Road, Chalkwell in March 2017. Despite having spent weeks in a coma and having no memory of his life before the accident, Ben’s recovery has astounded doctors, who have branded the impressive Westcliff dad “Mr One Percent”. “They call me that because one bleed normally leads to a stroke, and when you get to five, that is usually the end of things for people – to have nine bleeds makes me a walking miracle really,” said Ben.

His family was repeatedly told that his chances of survival were incredibly slim. When pneumonia and a collapsed lung prompted doctors to switch off Ben’s life support machine, the determined dad’s body kicked into action, and he began breathing for himself. “Although I can’t really remember anything from hospital, I have been told that from the start my determination was phenomenal,” he said.

“I was told I would never walk, never talk or never eat by myself and now I’ve defied all of the odds. “My first memory is when the doctors told me they were trying to get me moved back home.” Since being discharged from hospital, Ben has established a steady routine that has allowed him to get some sort of normality back into his life.

He lives in Westcliff with son, Oscar, is a regular gym goer and walks miles every morning - he recently wrote a book about his experience. “It’s called ‘A Little Bit Broken’ and it took me a while to feel comfortable enough with what had happened to be able to write it,” said Ben. “Every morning for three months I spent an hour writing, and I am so proud of all of the five star reviews I have got.

“I don’t make any plans for tomorrow – I just get up and do my best every day,” he added. A Little Bit Broken is available to purchase exclusively on Amazon..
