The run-up to Christmas is a flurry of festive markets, social gatherings, and savouring the season's finest offerings. Partaking in mince pies, mulled wine, and an array of cheeses and chocolates is all part of the merriment. Though it shouldn't overshadow the enjoyment of the festive period, you're not alone if you're considering your weight loss goals.
In the UK, Google searches related to belly fat have surged by a staggering 5,000% in the past month. Belly fat can be particularly challenging to shed, and it can be daunting to know where to start. Nutritionist and ambassador for , Tina Lond-Caulk, is here to demystify what it takes to burn belly fat and why it's so difficult to lose.
According to the expert, intermittent fasting could be your secret weapon for burning belly fat. But if that doesn't appeal, she has also provided a tailored meal plan that accommodates your sweet tooth. Belly fat isn't just an aesthetic concern.
The padding around our middles is made of two types of fat - subcutaneous fat, which lies under the skin, and visceral fat, which surrounds our organs. Visceral fat is linked to severe health issues like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. According to Tina, the key to burning belly fat comes down to diet.
She explained: "The real magic of belly fat loss happens in the kitchen — it's all about what we eat, how we sleep, and how we manage stress. "Unlike the jiggly subcutaneous fat under the skin, visceral fat is like a pesky party crasher, promoting inflammation and messing with our insulin. So, it’s not just about looking good; it's about feeling good and staying healthy.
" "Intermittent fasting, where you alternate between eating and fasting periods, can be a game-changer," Tin said. "It helps your body tap into fat stores for energy and can improve insulin sensitivity." This eating pattern alternates between periods of eating and fasting, helping the body use fat stores for energy and enhancing insulin sensitivity.
She suggests trying a 24-hour fast once a week, during which you consume only water, bone broth, or coffee with MCT oil, to give your digestive system a rest and jumpstart the fat-burning process. "Bone broth is an excellent choice because it's loaded with nutrients and electrolytes, keeping you nourished while you fast. If you opt for coffee or green tea with MCT oil (C8 & C10), it can help keep you full and provide the ketones your body needs to feel satiated," Tina noted.
"Drinking plenty of water is also essential for overall health and can help with weight management. Sometimes thirst is mistaken for hunger, so staying hydrated can prevent unnecessary snacking." Here's a suggested meal plan to help you lose weight without sacrificing flavour or satisfaction, courtesy of Tina.
For a nutrient-rich start to your day, try an omelette filled with spinach and tomatoes, seasoned with herbs. Accompany it with mixed berries for a burst of sweetness and a side boost of polyphenols to aid in producing Akkermansia – great for your gut health. Drink green tea or black coffee to rev up your metabolism minus the calories.
Come mid-morning, stave off those urges with plain Greek yoghurt topped with unsalted nuts or seeds, which are loaded with vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and fibre to keep you feeling full. Lunch serves up a delicious grilled chicken salad. Combine mixed dark greens, avocado, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, and lean grilled chicken breast.
Drizzle with homemade lemon vinaigrette featuring apple cider vinegar for a zesty twist. Add a slice of wholegrain bread if you're feeling extra peckish. For an afternoon snack, consider an apple with a tablespoon of almond or nut butter.
This combination provides a perfect blend of fibre and healthy fats to keep you satisfied. When it comes to dinner, baked salmon is the star of the show. Season a fillet with your favourite herbs like dill and a squeeze of lemon, then bake until tender and flaky.
Accompany this with a side of roasted vegetables such as broccoli, bell peppers, and carrots, along with a small portion of quinoa or brown rice for some beneficial carbs. If you fancy something sweet in the evening, a small piece of dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher) is an excellent choice. It's a tasty treat that's low in sugar and packed with polyphenols, which are great for boosting both memory and mood when consumed in moderation!.
