Leading mechanic Scotty Kilmer has revealed the best second-hand used cars to purchase with two models coming out on top. Generally, Scotty encouraged motorists to buy more common vehicles over luxury and limited edition designs. Vehicles which enjoyed plenty of success will have “millions” of stock available, making it easier to find a second-hand car to buy and parts later down the line.
Scotty stressed that models owned by lots of individuals will have a booming aftermarket trade with “lower priced parts” when things go wrong. In particular, he suggested the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic were two models motorists should keep their eye on. Speaking on YouTube , he said: “Today I’m going to tell you why beater cars like [Toyota] Corolla’s and [Honda] Civics are much better than used luxury vehicles.
“They often come pre-dinged so you don’t have to worry about those little scratches and because of these dings you can get them a lot cheaper. “Being simple and less complex cars they are cheaper to fix, since they sold millions of them there’s an insane aftermarket with lower-priced parts. “And trimming out all the luxury items, this doesn't even have power windows, it's a hand crank, that just means less expensive cars to repair.
“You want cheap dependable transportation, you can't beat a Corolla or a Civic.” On the title of the video, Scotty even suggested these two could be the “best cheap used car to buy”. The leading mechanic has previously praised the Corolla with particular attention to the car's handling, fuel economy and safety.
He recently suggested it could be an ideal first car for teenagers due to the low cost of insurance. However, Corolla’s can be pricey with some top-of-the-range examples on the market for an eye-watering £35,000. The Civic is one of Honda’s flagship models with the vehicle praised for its reliability and affordability.
Thousands of Civic cars change hands every year making it one of the most popular second-hand models in the UK. However, prices can dramatically vary with newer models likely to set buyers back over £10,000. The booming trade means that many can be picked up really cheap including many for under £1,000.
