A popular mechanic has taken to YouTube to share a simple yet incredibly effective way to prolong the life of their vehicle . Scotty Kilmer has worked with cars for more than 55 years and regularly posts videos to his YouTube channel in which he offers tips to avoid expensive damage and help viewers reduce the cost of running a car . In a recent video , Scotty urged drivers to regularly add a coat of wax to the bodywork of their car in order to protect its clear coat.

He explained: "Today I'm going to tell you something you probably never knew about car paint. Realise it's incredibly thin, it's measured in microns, which are a thousanth of a millimetre. This is 105 microns thick, and that's everything - the base coat, the primer, then the clear coat.

"The thing that you care about is the clear coat. It's like fingernail polish, it protects it and makes it shine. So, you have to wax it to keep it from cracking.

" Whilst drivers will struggle to see it, the clear coat on a vehicle is like a shield for the paintwork, protecting it from minor damage, dirt and weather. Over time, a number of items featuring acidic contents can come into contact with the clear coat, wearing it down and exposing the paintwork. To prevent this from causing damage to their vehicle's paintwork, which can affect the way it looks and its resale value, drivers should make sure to wash it regularly and apply a fresh coat of wax.

Later in the video, Scotty highlighted that drivers who do not regularly wax their vehicle risk having to spend thousands to get a full vehicle respray. He continued: "If it's cracked, it's not like you can go to a manicurist and spend £30 or £40. It costs thousands to paint a car correctly.

" Generally, drivers looking to keep their vehicle's paintwork sparkling and safe should apply a fresh coat of wax at least once every three months..
