Let's admit it, the weather in the UK is starting to get rather miserable. The days are getting shorter and it's extremely dark in the mornings, but at least it means the festive period is right around the corner. However, it's crucial to get a few last minute gardening jobs done before you snuggle up for the winter.
Over on TikTok, user @themediterraneangardener, who boasts 453,000 followers, recently revealed the crucial October jobs to complete this month to ensure you have thriving plants just in time for next summer. In a clip, he said: "You don't want to plant tulips yet but hyacinth, crocus, daffodils and alliums would look fantastic in your pots or borders, you just need to plant them three times a depth for the bulb. "This month is the last opportunity for you to aerate, scarify and over seed your lawn.
You can start collecting seeds from hardy perennials for next year and get your herbs ready for winter by cutting them back now." He then said it's imperative to raise pots up onto their feet to prevent water logging over winter and it's that time of the year to begin "order bare root fruit, trees and bushes". The user added: "Can start watering those house plants less frequently, giving them a clean and move them away from cold window sills.
" Another task to do in your garden is cleaning out the greenhouse to remove debris. "Let in the weaker autumn daylight and instal a water butt to make good use of the autumn rain," he explained before concluding: "Finally move potted citrus plants inside over winter, keeping them cool but frost free." Since he shared the all-important October gardening jobs, the post garnered 36,000 likes and numerous comments.
One asked: "Is my potted olive tree okay outside the UK?" While another chimed in: "Omg I love you, I forgot to move the house plants.".
