IIT-M launches centre of excellence for diabetes research

Chennai: IIT Madras has launched Shankar Centre of Excellence for Diabetes Research (SCoEDR). This new centre, established at the department of medical sciences and technology, is funded by alumnus Subramonian Shankar , CEO of AmZetta Technologies . The centre will support 15 PhD students as ‘Shankar fellows' and foster product development, startups, and commercialisation efforts.

Subramonian spoke about bridging academic research and industry application to address global health challenges. The inauguration ceremony was held in the presence of Chris Hodges, US consul-general in Chennai, and Prof V Kamakoti, director, IIT Madras. Prof Kamakoti emphasised on the centre's significance, noting its role in integrating technology to prevent and treat illnesses such as diabetes, which affects millions in India.



Hodges spoke about the collaboration between IIT Madras and the Emory Global Diabetes Research Center (EGDRC), based in US, and expressed his hope for future research partnerships between the two nations. tnn.
