
Qatar tribune Tribune News Network Doha The Institution of Engineers (India) Qatar Chapter (IEI QC) organised a thought-provoking seminar on ‘Sustainability - A Myth or Reality?’ on January 31 in Doha. As a leading professional organisation dedicated to advancing engineering practices in Qatar, IEI QC brought together more than 150 engineers, both in person and online, to discuss the pressing issue of sustainability. Abdul Sathar, honorarychairman of IEI Qatar Chapter, delivered the presidential address.
He said the seminar reflects the Institution of Engineers’ commitment to the sustainability journey, while highlighting how sustainability has become a crucial topic in recent years, frequently discussed in the context of climate change, resource depletion, and environmental preservation. Guest of Honour Er. Khalid Fakhroo, senior petroleum engineer, highlighted the remarkable contributions of IEI to Qatar’s professional community across various engineering disciplines.
He also underscored the significance of the longstanding 50-year bilateral relations between India and Qatar. Guest of Honour Thaha Muhammed, president of IBPC, addressed the gathering, stressing that sustainability is very much a reality—one brought to life by the ingenuity and dedication of engineers and innovators worldwide. He pointed out how advancements in renewable energy systems, circular economies, green building designs, and sustainable urban planning serve as proof that sustainability is not just possible but actively taking shape.
A panel discussion featured eminent scholars from renowned universities, including Dr Probir Das from Qatar University, Dr Rafal Al Mufti from Oryx Universal College, Dr Farhat Abbas from the University of Doha for Science and Technology, and Nibu Mathews from QDC. The session was moderated by Er KM Salihudeen, past Chairman of IEI Qatar Chapter. The panelists shared their insights, research, and practical experiences on the challenges and opportunities in achieving sustainability across various sectors.
The discussion examined whether sustainability is a tangible reality or merely an aspirational myth, addressing critical issues such as resource management, environmental impact, technological advancements, and policy frameworks. The event provided a platform for networking and knowledge exchange, fostering collaboration among professionals, academics, and industry stakeholders. Participants left the seminar with a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding sustainability and its implications for the future.
IEI Qatar Chapter also honoured Er. HPS Bhullar Singh for his outstanding and long-standing contributions to the engineering community. Aparna Jain compered the event, while the IEI Women’s Wing coordinated the session.
Since its inception, the Qatar Chapter of the Institution of Engineers (India) has been rendering excellent professional services to the engineering community in Qatar, consistently upholding the objectives of the Institution for the past 34 years. One of its major activities includes the regular organisation of technical seminars and workshops for member engineers in Qatar. Additionally, the chapter actively promotes the advancement of engineering and technology, providing a platform for technical interaction and continuous professional development within the engineering community.
