For many New Yorkers, the nostalgic tune of a Mister Softee ice cream truck heralds the joy of summer streets. Now, the hum of a stationary Mister Softee can be heard—from its first-ever brick-and-mortar shop on Long Island. Set in East Islip at 195 Carleton Avenue, the new store continues the Mister Softee legacy with over 40 flavors and the much-loved classics like shakes and banana boats.
As reported by Eater New York, the welcome surprise was flagged earlier this week, serving as a potential harbinger for an NYC-based outlet, although that decision, according to a flagship store employee, "hadn’t been determined yet."Despite modern-day challenges, including competition, inflation, and even hotter weather affecting sales, Mister Softee has stood the test of time. Having adorned American streets since 1956, the company still operates 625 trucks across 18 states.
But as Time Out reported, it is the embrace of innovation that keeps the brand cool: the Long Island spot not only pays tribute to the location’s former resident, Pam’s Ice Cream Shoppe, but it also introduces new twists like crepes and ice cream burgers. While Mister Softee's transition to a brick-and-mortar model may represent an adaptation to changing times, the ice cream franchise still clings to tradition. The brand is run by the same family from Runnemede, New Jersey, says Eater New York.
"Competition and rising costs are hurting sales," Time Out explains. Yet for all these headwinds, the company’s app, offering truck tracking for on-the-go indulgence, ensures the Mister Softee jingle will still lead to streetside delights..
