After years of anticipation, Tashkent Supermarket, a staple of Brighton Beach's culinary scene, has finally opened its doors in Manhattan's West Village. According to Eater, the new 378 Sixth Avenue location offers a plethora of prepared foods, fresh groceries, and hot bar items that have become synonymous with the Tashkent name. "Having a location in Manhattan has always been a dream of ours," Misa Khayriddinova, a member of Tashkent’s operations team, told Eater.
Shoppers entering the new store are greeted by the aroma of Tashkent’s signature Samarkind-style plov, a beloved dish featuring rice and stewed meat served from large drum-like basins. The richly seasoned plov, laden with chickpeas and raisins, is just one of the many hot items prepared fresh in the open kitchen. Grub Street notes the excitement over the opening, with fans expressing disbelief and joy upon realizing the store was finally operational.
"Dude, Tashkent is finally opening," a fellow plov enthusiast texted.Aside from hot dishes, Tashkent's new Manhattan outpost also showcases a bakery counter, a made-to-order kebab bar, and a variety of freshly prepared eats such as manti, pelmeni, and lagman. The downstairs commissary bustles with activity as it mirrors the retail floor’s 1,525 square feet, ensuring a constant supply of ready-to-eat foods.
As Eater reports, the hot bar may have garnered the most attention, but Tashkent's comprehensive grocery offerings, including cuts from their own halal, USDA-certified slaughterhouse, are not to be overshadowed. The Tashkent in Manhattan also provides a selection of smoked and cured sausages, fresh produce, and other grocery staples. For the area's many students, Tashkent in the West Village seems to function as a gateway to Central Asian cuisine, where putting together a $10 meal for a Washington Square Park lunch is easy, as per Grub Street.
This sentiment echoes a friend of Grub Street, who suggested that the store's opening might just "change it all" for Uzbek cuisine in Manhattan.Tashkent’s Manhattan store is open daily from 6 a.m.
until 11 p.m. The breakfast offerings, which include items like syrniki, switch to lunch options around noon.
