Featuring 19 teams, there were only two slots for qualification, and two teams were relegated in a fiercely contested four-group competition. The quartet of Osun Babes, Pelican Stars, Honey Badgers, and Ibom Angels topped their respective groups, hence the matchup between Osun Babes against Ibom Angels and Honey Badgers against host team Pelican Stars.
