I-78 crash involving hit-and-run driver leaves 1 dead, 1 seriously injured

A pickup truck was pushed into a parked tractor-trailer Sunday afternoon in Hunterdon County .

One person was killed and one seriously injured Sunday after a hit-and-run driver struck a pickup truck and pushed it into a tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder of Interstate 78. Two 78-year-old Canadians were traveling east near milepost 7.8 in Bethlehem when a vehicle hit their pickup on the side at about 4:45 p.

m., State Police said. The driver, Alan Smith, was pronounced dead at the scene.



The passenger, a woman, was flown to a hospital with serious injuries. Both are residents of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. A camper was hitched to the pickup truck.

The hit-and-run vehicle continued east on Interstate 78. The tractor-trailer driver was not hurt. State Police said the crash remains under investigation.
