A food enthusiast delivered a stark warning after visiting Tom Kerridge's famous fish and chips to find two things left him angry. YouTube star Ed Chapman sampled the fare at Kerridge's Fish and Chips located in the opulent Harrods as part of his quest to review Britain's priciest meals. And he quickly warned: "Just go to a proper chippy.
Don't, whatever you do, be tempted by Tom Kerridge's version." The establishment, no stranger to scrutiny over its steep prices, has seen chef Tom defend the costs, attributing them to high-quality ingredients. He also stressed that he doesn't set the prices and that the eatery's setting in what he calls 'the most beautiful food hall in the world' justifies the expense.
Tom's venue is a far cry from your typical fish and chip shop, nestled within one of the UK's most upscale department stores. However, when Ed's £37 order arrived, his initial reaction was underwhelming. "One thing I will say about the fish is the batter doesn't look that crispy," he remarked.
Despite it being served with a variety of sauces and eight thick-cut chips, Chapman was far from satisfied with his meal. Upon completing his dining experience, he expressed his severe disappointment, saying: "That was quite possibly the worst fish and chips I've ever had." Ignoring the exorbitant cost, he felt the meal fell short of expectations, admitting he would have likely returned it if he wasn't filming for his YouTube channel.
"I'm almost speechless at how bad that was," he expressed. "I anticipated it to be poor value for money..
. I didn't quite expect it to be that dreadful though. Not only was it poor value for money, but the food was simply terrible.
" The haddock was "dry," he claimed, adding: "There wasn't any kind of crunch or crispiness to the batter; it was thin and lacked a buttery feel – it was an absolute disaster." His second issue with the meal was the chips, which he claimed had an unusual earthy quality unlike any other chips he's ever tasted. He continued: "I'm not a fan of chunky chips as it is, but these – and this is odd to say – had the rootiness and the earthiness of a potato.
"I understand that's what chips are, but I don't think I've ever had a chip where you can actually taste the rootiness of what you're eating. If I wanted that, I'd have a potato – Let chips be chips!" Struggling to find something positive to mention, Ed highlighted that the restaurant staff were courteous and amiable, but that was about all. However, not everyone has been let down by the food at Tom's restaurant.
One reviewer on Tripadvisor awarded it a flawless 5 stars, stating: "Thinking about fish...
This is the place! The fish soup and the grilled Cornish Brill are the best!". Tom Kerridge's representatives have been contacted for comment..
