Although I'll never give up savoury food, I'll always have a penchant for sweet things. French goods have my heart, but so many other places have contributed greatly to the pastry-making heritage. These include Scandinavia, which gave the world the delight that are cinnamon rolls.
In my humble opinion, they're one of the best pastries around. So when I saw there was a place in London offering cinnamon rolls with toppings each more mouth-watering than the last, I knew I had to check it out. Roll Boys opened a residency at Saint Espresso in Hackney a few weeks ago, and their products went viral on social media.
As I knew that most of the flavours were likely to sell out quickly, I arrived just after the opening. These cinnamon rolls are only available at weekends, and I live about an hour away, but I - for once - didn't regret having to get up early on a day off. When I got there, there was already a queue of customers.
But it quickly moved, and before I knew it, a waiter had come to take my order. With his help, I settled on five flavours. These were the Maple Pecan Bacon Roll, Cinnamon Roll, Chocolate Chip Blackout Roll, Cookie Butter Roll and Caramel Apple Crumble Roll.
After securing the goods, I headed back home to enjoy them. Following the instructions provided with my order, I reheated them for a few seconds in the microwave before indulging. Despite not eating the rolls immediately after they came out of the oven, they still tasted very fresh.
I tried a bite of each to start with, and that made me want more. I was a bit sceptical about the Caramel Apple Crumble Roll one, as I'm not particularly fond of caramel. But I was pleasantly surprised, and found that all the flavours complemented each other well.
The Chocolate Chip Blackout and Cookie Butter rolls were some of the tastiest. The chocolate and Biscoff pair perfectly with the cinnamon, without being overly sweet. I also tried the regular cinnamon roll, to gauge if it was as good as the ones with toppings.
Well, spoiler alert, it was. It's made with just the right amount of cinnamon, and I can confidently say it's one of the best I've ever had. However, my all-time favourite was the Maple Pecan Bacon Roll.
Putting bacon on a sweet pastry may seem surprising at first. But the combination of all these different flavours, and textures, works out brilliantly. Priced between £4.
50 and £6.50, Roll Boys' creations are the bounciest cinnamon rolls I've had in London so far. They may not be your cup of tea if you don't have a sweet tooth, but if you do, head to Hackney.
