Obviously, people aren't limited to eating them just one day of the year though, as you can find a wide selection in supermarkets, usually from around November. The popularity of the pork cocktail sausages wrapped in bacon means there are tonnes of different flavours and versions of them. Anyone who looks around the supermarkets will be spoilt for choice, so there might be some debate about which places have the best on offer.
I decided to test out a few from various different shops, with an emphasis placed on the slightly fancier versions available. In the end, I picked out pigs in blankets from Aldi, Asda, Tesco and M&S and compared them. I compared supermarket pigs in blankets : The Ultimate Pigs in Blankets : £2.
99 : 6 (approx. 49p per pig in blanket) Aldi's 'The Ultimate Pigs in Blankets' was certainly a departure from what I expected. At only six pigs in blankets in a packet, there were the worst for the value of all that I tried at 49p per item.
However, they made up for it in their size, as they were plump, to say the least. They were probably about twice the size of a regular pig in a blanket, were quite crisp and had decent flavour to boot. It's a very rare case of a pig in a blanket being bad of course, but Aldi's offering offered a step up from the average.
: 4.5/5 : Tesco Finest British Pigs in Blankets : £3.50 : 10 (35p per pig in blanket) Some slightly pigs in blankets could be found with Tesco's Finest option, which I found to be to its benefit.
Their bite-size nature, crispiness and great salty flavour meant they were difficult to stop eating. The only slight downside was the sheer amount of fat that came off in the cooking process, which made cleaning up a bit of a faff. However, purely in terms of taste, they were brilliant.
: 4.5/5 : Exceptional by Asda Pigs in Blankets : £3 : 10 (30p per pig in blanket) There wasn't a huge amount of difference between 'Exceptional by Asda Pigs in Blankets' and Tesco's in terms of size and the taste was also pretty good too. At just 30p per item, they also had the best value of all the ones I tried, which gives it a boost.
It's certainly a very good option to make the most of this festive season. : 4/5 : M&S Pigs in Blankets : £5.50 : 14 (39p per pig in blanket) I don't know if it was the novelty of pigs in blankets having worn off, but I really didn't enjoy the offering from M&S.
On my shopping trip to the supermarket, I wasn't able to find a 'special' version of food like I had with the others. However, the value per item was still more expensive than Asda and Tesco so it still seemed like fair game. They didn't crisp up nearly as much as the others, and the overall greasy taste just wasn't fun at all.
: 2/5 The verdict Overall, it was quite hard to pick between the supermarkets as, aside from M&S, I really enjoyed all of them. As I'm pushed to make a decision I think I may go with Tesco as being my favourite, due to the crispness and appropriately sized items that you can eat plenty of in one go. Aldi would come a close second, as you do get a lot from an 'Ultimate Pig in Blanket' but there are so few of them in a pack.
