Jake Paul was carrying a troubling injury into his victory over Mike Tyson. The YouTuber-turned-boxer fought in a seismic event in front of millions of eyes around the globe, as he took on 58-year-old heavyweight legend Tyson in an eight round professional fight. Paul was able to outbox the veteran, who was a complete shadow of himself, in a laboured affair which saw him pick up a comfortable points victory .
Tyson appeared to have been carrying an injury, with strapping on his knee which appeared to hinder his movement during the fight. But 'El Gallo' had revealed he was also fighting with an ankle injury, when giving a reason for his sluggish performance. And he has since opened up further on it, explaining how it hindered his preparations.
He said on his podcast : "I missed about two weeks of sparring and I really couldn't do much. "I only could spar in the last 7 days before the fight, I still had a really weak ankle. "I still taped it up all the time, I was good enough to go in there but I definitely felt my cardio was affected.
"I think I healed my ankle sprain faster than any human in the world." Paul didn't look at his best, but in truth never needed to be, as he coasted against the veteran. Tyson simply had nothing left in the gas tank, as he was clipped by a triple left hook, which took away any early momentum he had.
The 'Problem Child' didn't need his best, and appeared to show restraint to Tyson , when pursuing a potential KO of the former undisputed champion. Tyson himself was far from in prime condition, given he was 58-years-old and has a raft of health conditions. He himself had been forced to withdraw from their originally planned date in July.
And when posting on social media for the first time since the defeat, Tyson claimed he 'almost died' in a worrying moment before their clash. "This is one of those situations when you lost but still won," Tyson said. "I’m grateful for last night.
No regrets to get in ring one last time. "I almost died in June. Had eight blood transfusions.
"Lost half my blood and 25lbs in hospital and had to fight to get healthy to fight so I won. "To have my children see me stand toe to toe and finish eight rounds with a talented fighter half my age in front of a packed Dallas Cowboy stadium is an experience that no man has the right to ask for. Thank you.
