Not a day goes by where I don't think about pizza at least once. It doesn't matter the time of day, season or any other factor - if you ask me to go and get a pizza, the answer will always be yes. And thankfully, I don't have to go very far to get my hands on what's been hailed as one of the best pizzas not just in Scotland, not just in the UK, but in the whole world.
That's right - the Time Out ranking of the world's best pizza was unveiled at the start of the month, and I was thrilled to see one of my personal favourites make the list. Civerinos has four locations in Edinburgh, and opened one in my hometown of Glasgow back in 2023. I've been to Civerinos many times, and I can truly attest to how great it is.
A chilled atmosphere with great tunes on all the time, slices of pizza bigger than your head and priced really reasonably, and amazing drinks too - including delicious frozen margaritas - it's hard to find fault. There are plenty of options on the menu depending on what you like. Vegan, veggie and meat options are all on there, and you can either buy a full pizza or simply get a slice or two if you want to sample even more flavours - which is still hugely satisfying.
Time Out ranked the New Haven-style slice on the menu as one of the best in the world, which is topped with Italian sausage, double marinara, burrata, pepperoni, rosemary, black pepper, parsley and garlic oil. They described it as 'one of the best slices you'll ever shove your gob'. While I'd like to agree, being a vegetarian I haven't actually sampled this specific one for myself.
However, they do offer a meat-free version with just marinara sauce and pecorino, which does sound delicious. And while I love a good slice as much as the next person, there's one thing that keeps me coming back again and again - and surprisingly, it's not the pizza at all. For me, the true star of the show at Civerinos is the side dishes - in particular, the truffle and parmesan fries.
I truly don't know how they make something so simple taste so delicious, but I do know that I hoover them up every single time. The crispy fries are covered with a generous dousing of grated parm with some Italian seasonings thrown on for good measure, served up in a plastic bowl with a red checked napkin for a relaxed yet authentic feel. And the truffle aioli that comes with them? If I could, I'd drink this with a straw.
It's the perfect accompaniment and just the right amount of luxury without tasting too sickly. Another highlight is, of course, the frozen margaritas. Light and refreshing, they are the perfect beverage to enjoy alongside your Civerinos order—and I can't wait until the weather gets warm enough for me to sit outside and enjoy them.
If you haven't tried this spot yet, I highly recommend doing so. Slices start at £4.25, making it the perfect spot to grab a quick lunch.
For those living near enough, Civerinos also offers delivery..
