She had just coached Mumbai Indians (MI) to their second Women's Premier League ( WPL ) title in three editions of the T20 tournament. Quizzed about at what point she felt MI had a chance of taking it home, she pointed at Delhi Capitals’ (DC) slow start followed by the wickets of Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma.

The DC opening combination has been a thorn in MI’s flesh throughout the WPL, and it was no different this time around as the duo made significant contributions in both their wins during the group stage. While Shafali gave them an explosive start with her 18-ball 43 in the first clash of the season, both stitched an 85-run opening stand in a nine-wicket win in the reverse fixture.
“When I went out during the first strategic timeout, I told Harman and Nat that if we can get ourselves over 140, we’re in with a chance. We knew we were a little bit light, but in a final, it’s always worth a little bit more,” Edwards said about MI’s total. But her confidence increased when DC adopted a cautious approach as they started their chase.
“I didn’t know if and how it would affect Delhi, but the way they started, it did affect them. Verma didn’t come out like she normally does, and I knew straight away that we were in with a chance. It fell in our hands a little bit that we were a bit short, and then they went about it a bit slower than they normally do,” Edwards said.
