Former New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Sekondi Constituency, Andrew Egyapa Mercer Former New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Sekondi Constituency, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has raised concerns over actions of the government of President John Dramani Mahama, which he fears may be returning Ghana to the days of military dictatorship. Speaking on the Saturday, April 12, 2025, edition of Newsfile, the former Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts condemned the attempted arrest of the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, describing it as lawless. “What kind of lawlessness is this? And it’s early days yet.
I hope and pray that Mr Mahama’s promise of resetting is not one that resets Ghana into a military era,” he cautioned. On April 9, 2025, operatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) attempted to arrest Rev John Ntim Fordjour, who also serves as the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, at his Spintex residence. The action followed Ntim Fordjour’s April 1, 2025, press conference, where he alleged that two AirMed aircraft that landed at the Kotoka International Airport in March 2025 were involved in potential drug trafficking and money laundering.
The attempted arrest was halted after the intervention of the NPP Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and other party leaders. Reacting to the arrest attempt on Saturday, Egyapa Mercer questioned the basis for it, expressing disbelief over the justifications. “I have read Ntim Fordjour’s press statement, read on behalf of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, three times, and I am still at a loss as to what crime he has committed for the government to want to arrest him,” he stated.
