There is no doubt that Yvonne's Cafe is popular with locals and cyclists alike, but I thing the term hidden gem is apt as it is tucked away off the main road through Connah's Quay. Situated on Dock Road, close to the end of the National Cycle Route 5, Yvonne's cafe has seemingly developed an eclectic clientele. While I was there for breakfast, local workers from the industrial units sat at tables alongside those out for a bike ride.
There was Hi-Vis everywhere I looked. Outside the cafe. (Image: Newsquest) There is also parking for cars.
The approach to the cafe is adorned with pieces of Deeside's maritime history as well as push bikes positioned high on poles. The themes are repeated inside the cosy container that houses the cafe, with items marking the shared history of the docks and town. History on the table.
(Image: Newsquest) Even the tables are decorated with photographs and text recalling local shops and industry. I was struck by the prices and even dare to say that this might be the cheapest cooked breakfast available in the area. Breakfast with toast and a hot drink.
(Image: Newsquest) A fry up with toast and a hot drink for just less than £7 is hard to beat. Bigger breakfasts are available, and most customers that I heard placing orders had their own bespoke breakfasts. ROOM FOR MORE? Hash browns, black pudding, and other items were available, but I opted for a more modest plate.
Breakfast at Yvonne's Cafe in Connah's Quay. (Image: Newsquest) After placing my order at the counter, my coffee was poured for me, and I waited at my table. Soon after, a hostess trolley was rolled along between the tables bearing several orders.
The breakfast was very good, both in quality and value, and the service was friendly and efficient. Eggs are most often served sunnyside up, but this egg was over easy - which is my preference. It's not just breakfasts served at Yvonne's, reviews on Tripadvisor rave about the homemade cakes and comforting dishes like cottage pie and stews.
All in all a great way to fill up for less than a tenner, before going back to work or making the return pedal-powered journey on the cycle path..
