Yesteryear actor Abhirami, in an interview given to a popular magazine sometime ago, opened up about her decision to step away from the film industry to pursue higher education in the United States. The actor shared insights into her journey, including the pivotal moments leading up to her academic pursuits. Abhirami revealed that during the filming of , she applied for a course in Psychology and Communications at the College of Wooster in Ohio.
“I thought having recommendation letters would strengthen my application,” she said, recounting how she approached legendary filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan for one such letter. “He kindly provided a recommendation,” she added. However, her attempt to secure a recommendation from actor Kamal Haasan, her co-star in , took an unexpected turn.
“When I asked Kamal sir for a recommendation letter, he said no. Instead, he told me, ‘You’re not someone who should leave this industry. You have a bright future in cinema.
’” Despite his advice, Abhirami’s mind was set. After completing the shoot for , she received her admission confirmation and left for the United States. “It wasn’t a decision I made overnight.
It was the result of a year-long contemplation,” she explained. Reflecting on her journey, Abhirami shared how her parents supported her unconditionally, both when she left her studies to pursue acting and later when she decided to leave her thriving career to study abroad at the age of 21. “I don’t know, I made the decision to leave cinema and go abroad for studies.
It did bring an abrupt full stop to a career that was flourishing in four languages.” Abhirami over the last few years made a notable comeback into films with several noteworthy performances in films including and . Being a multi-faceted personality, Abhiram continues her triumphant journey in both professional and personal fronts.
