Article content Hyundai is recalling nearly 1,600 examples of its Nexo hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) in the U.S. and Canada over a fire risk and warning owners to park their cars outdoors and away from other vehicles and structures.

The fire risk comes from the potential for the Nexo EVs to leak hydrogen fuel, says the automakers; the Nexo SUVs affected come from model years 2019 through 2024. On affected vehicles, “a pressure-relief device can break and cause a hydrogen leak,” reports the Associated Press, which could lead to a fire even when the vehicle is parked. The Nexo FCEVs are still safe to drive, though, Hyundai says, and it’s received no reports of fires yet.

The fix involves dealers simply replacing the pressure-relief device on affected Nexo vehicles. Hyundai introduced the Nexo to Canada in 2019; the 2024 model starts at $72,500. While the Nexo is available nationwide, refuelling locations for the vehicle are located only in B.

C. and Quebec. The crossover SUV is sold through Hyundai head office, with each purchase request considered case by case.
