Hydrangeas are pretty easy to look after, and their vibrant blooms in a range of colours makes them a very popular garden plant. However, getting them to flower isn't always the easiest task. This is especially true after the winter, when your hydrangeas might look a little leggy and bare.
But according to Plant Daddy on TikTok , gardeners 'shouldn't panic' if this is the case. All it takes to get your hydrangeas summer-ready in minutes is one very easy task. Showing off a pretty limp and lifeless-looking hydrangea plant in one of his videos, the expert - who boasts more than 40,000 followers on TikTok - he said: "If last year's hydrangea is looking a little bit like this, don't panic.
That's perfectly normal." He says the trick to a healthy and thriving hydrangea lies in the pruning, and demonstrated exactly how to do this. He continued: "I'm going to show you where you need to cut to ensure you get flowers again this year.
" Taking one of the old flowers on the plant, he explained you need to follow it down the stem until you reach the first pair of healthy buds. Then, just cut above these, as this is where the new flowers will come from this year. He added: "Repeat this throughout the whole plant and you're good to do.
" And right now is the perfect time of the year to do it too. The gardener explained: "I tend to do this in April when the risk of frost has passed." Hydrangeas tend to bloom in mid to late summer, so you can give them the best chance of doing so by pruning your plant now and preparing it for that warmer weather.
At this time, you should also remove any weak, straggly stems, or any ones that trail on to the ground. This will ensure your hydrangea plant is as strong and healthy as possible..
