Today marks my 23rd trip around the sun. That’s a total of 276 birthday candles blown out (presumably), 8,400 sunrises and sunsets (roughly) and probably billions of words spoken.

Today marks my 23rd trip around the sun. That’s a total of 276 birthday candles blown out (presumably), 8,400 sunrises and sunsets (roughly) and probably billions of words spoken. In the past 23 years, I have lived and learned a lot.

All of my living and learning and failing and succeeding has left me with a set of rules and several bits of advice I can pass on to other people, but I usually just end up reminding myself. They are as follows: 1. Your mom is usually right.

2. The best beer is free beer. 3.

Always make sure there’s toilet paper before you sit down to go. 4. Your credit card limit is not an extension of your income.

5. You are the only person that will be with you forever, so make sure you like yourself. 6.

Your parents are human. 7. Farts are funny.

8. Don’t be afraid to ask for things. 9.

Most things are more fun when you don’t take them seriously, especially karaoke, bowling and mini golf. 10. People can change, but that doesn’t always mean they will.

11. Nobody cares about you as much as you care about yourself. 12.

Something’s popularity does not make it good or bad. 13. Never wear brand new shoes on a big day because you will get blisters.

14. You don’t always have to accept an apology — sometimes it isn’t OK. 15.

Nobody has their crap together, and anyone who says they do is full of it. 16. Someone treating you badly is usually a reflection of them, not you.

17. Don’t go to bed before your nail polish dries. 18.

Someone else’s beauty does not take away from your own. 19. Living within a short driving distance of the people you love the most is not something to be taken for granted.

20. Stop trying to shrink yourself, figuratively or physically. 21.

Worrying about something won’t change it. 22. Always drive yourself to a first date.

23. If you don’t laugh, you’ll cry. My life is awesome, terrible, crazy, perfect, comfortable, chaotic and unpredictable.

You never know how many years you have to walk this planet, but I sure am glad to have been given number 23..
