By VELERIE BULUMARIS THE Huon Gulf Volleyball Association has about 20 clubs signing up but lacks certified referees and scorers. As the association gears up for its season proper, its challenge remains in its inability to acquire proper qualified refs and scorers to run its game. To address that the association is hosting training courses for referees and scorers at the Lae Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium.

The training is sponsored by the PNG Sports Foundation and Lae City Authority to improve skills and capacity of participants in the northern region. According to HGVA Representative Kila Joe (pictured), the training will ease their challenge of having no qualified officials. The HGVA committee has decided to run the proper season in the first week of May until end of September due to the federation’s failure to provide them with this year’s games program.

Mr Joe said they have teams undergoing training for the PNG Volleyball Federation. “Our members are in training, but we are still in the dark as to when PNGVF will provide us with this year’s regional calendar,” he said. He said the association’s Under-21 and Open teams are preparing for the national titles in Port Moresby.
