More than 74,000 people across the UK have signed a petition to Parliament demanding that companies ban people under the age of 16 accessing accounts. Earlier this month, all of Australia’s states and territories unanimously pledged their support to a national plan which aims to stop children under the age of 16 from accessing social media platforms.

The legislation will be introduced into the Australian Parliament within two weeks, and the age ban would take effect a year after it passes into law, giving platforms time to work out how to exclude children. Here in Cambridgeshire , the petition to the UK parliament has been signed by 118 people in the Cambridge Parliamentary constituency. It has also been signed by 191 people in South Cambridgeshire and 175 people in St Neots and Mid-Cambridgeshire.

Elsewhere in the county, 211 people in Ely and East Cambridgeshire have also put their signatures to the petition. It has also been signed by 123 people in Huntingdon , 115 in North West Cambridgeshire, 40 in North East Cambridgeshire and 52 in Peterborough . The petition, which can be viewed here , states: "We believe social media companies should be banned from letting children under 16 create social media accounts.

We think this would help: stop online bullying, stop children being influenced by false posts, stop children seeing content that encourages violence/could be harmful for their future. "We believe social media is having more of a negative impact to children than a positive one. We think people should be of an age where they can make decisions about their life before accessing social media applications.

We believe that we really need to introduce a minimum age of 16 to access social media for the sake of our children’s future along with their mental and physical health." Story Saved You can find this story in My Bookmarks. Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.
