Hull City mentality explained as Ruben Selles makes Sheffield Wednesday confession

The Tigers know they must respond in the Steel City on Saturday after a damaging loss against Luton

Hull City's disappointing 1-0 home loss to Luton Town on Saturday left a near-capacity crowd frustrated at their side's inability to move further clear of the relegation zone, and boss Ruben Selles wishing he had a midweek game to try and put it right. Instead, City will have to wait until they play Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Saturday to try and respond to a defeat that could yet see them perched a point and place above the relegation zone. The full damage of their loss to the second-bottom Hatters won't be fully known until late on Wednesday night when Derby County face Preston North End at Pride Park, with the Rams knowing victory would move them level on points with City, and dump Cardiff City back into the drop zone.

A big win for John Eustace's side over the Lillywhites, who were beaten 3-0 at home in the FA Cup quater-final by Aston Villa on Sunday, could see them leapfrog the Tigers on goal difference. So frustrated was Selles with the second half display against Luton, the City boss is cursing the fact there is no midweek game this side of the international break, and a Yorkshire derby away from home should need no introduction. "Yes, absolutely (desperate to put it right).

I think that's our mentality," Selles told Hull Live. "We take one game at a time. We are disappointed with the result and with that situation in the second half that changed the game and our response.

From the next training session, we are just going to go fully for it, and then we're going to go and play the next game trying to get the three points as usual. "It is what it is. It's the game that we have in front of us; we never can pick.

It's the best game because it's the next game that we have in front of us. My feeling, as with all of the players, is that if we can play that game on Tuesday instead of Saturday, it will be better because we will only have three days of this feeling. "We would like to take that feeling out and then prove that we can be competitive as in any scenario.

Sheffield is as good a good game as it can be. Our task is to be ready to go there and be ourselves and then compete for the game." Given there is no midweek game, well, at least until the Tigers visit Watford next Tuesday evening, City's players should have plenty of fuel going into the Yorkshire derby, where they'll be backed by more than 3,000 at Hillsborough.

"Yes (the feeling to put it right will be at fever pitch)," Selles explained. "That's what I expect from everyone from my side. Now, as we do usually when we have a week, we need to analyse why the things happened (against Luton), why we were successful in the first half, but we didn't finish the job, and why we were not successful in the second half.
