Sean McLoughlin admits Hull City have seven cup finals left as they scramble to secure their Championship safety in the final month or so of the season. Saturday's 1-0 loss at Luton Town left City in a vulnerable position as the Hatters, who could have been nine points behind the Tigers had Ruben Selles' men won, moved to within three points of the East Yorkshire club and to within two points of safety. City have had a clear week to put that result out of their system, with attention now firmly on Saturday's Yorkshire derby at Sheffield Wednesday, as they look to return to winning ways after three games without one.
The Irishman says his teammates cannot get bogged down by what the teams around them are doing, and instead focus on what they're doing, and ensure they produce the results they need. "Look, you could look at it the other way. If we didn't get these results, then we'd be in a worse-off position.
We've been doing really well, focusing on ourselves, it's all we can do," McLoughlin told Hull Live. "If we finish the season strong and play the way we think we can play, then we should be fine. It's in our hands, so that's what we're going to try and continue to do.
It's down to us really to go and put into the performances. It didn't work out (against Luton), but there are plenty more points to play for. "I think it needs to be (the mentality of having seven cup finals left).
We need to be calm as well, going into it. We believe in the quality and the character that we have in the team, and if we play to the best of our ability, we'll be fine, but obviously, we need to put that into action. I think it's just part of it.
You have to draw on your experience and try to remain calm and help the young players, especially, as we said earlier it's in our hands. "It's up to us, and we know the quality that we have. If you start focusing on other teams around, you're probably going to have a few problems, so yes, we just need to stay calm, focus on what we can do and what we can control.
