What a shame. Since his arrival from Atlético Madrid in 2023, Javier Fernandez has proven to be an excellent player for Bayern Munich ’s youth teams, quickly shot up in the club’s esteem, started to regularly train with the first team and recovered in time from a long term groin injury to be one of the youngster Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany brought with him to the entirety of the first team’s pre-season. And then he suffered a nasty injury.
Almost immediately after returning from pre-season, Fernandez suffered an ankle injury that kept him out for the entirety of the Hinrunde . And now he is hurt again. While leading Bayern’s U-19s out onto the pitch as captain in a crucial match against Real Betis’ U-19s in the UEFA Youth League, Fernandez went down early in the match.
He tried to play on and made it to 70 minutes, but clearly simply could not continue. And now the consequences of playing on have been revealed, via Bayern’s official website : Midfielder Javier Fernández sustained an injury to his right knee in the Youth League victory over Betis Sevilla (1-0) and has already undergone successful surgery. He will be absent from the amateurs and the U19s for several weeks.
The initial diagnosis of “several weeks” is not so bad, but remember that this was the initial prognosis of Josip Stanišić’s recent injury as well. And that one ended up taking over four months to heal. With Fernandez’s contract up by June this year, the club needs to make a decision.
His talent and quality is undeniable, but so is his recent negative injury record. Will they retain the Spanish maestro? Or will he leave for pastures anew in the summer? BFW Analysis They need to keep Fernandez. He’s too good to let him leave.
