Silvio Giardina scored a game-high 26 points, eight of them coming in the fourth quarter, to lead Pittston Area to a 67-65 win over Wilkes-Barre Area on Tuesday in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 boys basketball. Paul Jordan McGarry scored 17 points for the Patriots, while Lucas Lopresto finished with 13. Pittston Area finished the game shooting 14 of 16 from the foul line — including 6 of 8 in the fourth quarter.
David Jannuzzi led Wilkes-Barre Area with 18 points. Tahir Bolden scored 12, while Mike Keating added 10. Wilkes-Barre Area held a three-point lead at the half, but Pittston Area fought back, scoring 39 points in the second half to pull out the victory.
It was the second time Pittston Area defeated Wilkes-Barre Area by two points this season. On Dec. 21, the Patriots won, 61-59.
Wilkes-Barre Area is now 5-3 in Division 1 of the Wyoming Valley Conference. Pittston Area improved to 5-3. Hanover Area 36, Lake-Lehman 35: At Lake-Lehman, Hanover outscored Lehman by 10 in the fourth quarter to rally for a one-point win over the Black Knights in WVC Division 2 play.
Gernard Williams scored seven points in the fourth quarter, and ended with a game-high 15 points. Andrew Kistner hit two big 3-pointers in the fourth for his six points. Ben Dowling scored 15 points to pace Lake-Lehman.
Wyoming Valley West 58, Nanticoke Area 47: At Nanticoke, in a closely-contested game, Valley West’s 19-8 second quarter for pushed the Spartans past Nanticoke Area in a tightly contested WVC Division 1 contest. Three players netted double figures for the Spartans, led by Lemar Weatherspoon’s 19 points. Jacob Stevens added 13, while Navion Terry dropped 10.
Nanticoke’s Mathias Mitchell had a big night with 26 points — nine of them coming in the third quarter. Ethan Ball added 16 in the setback. Girls basketball Despite 21 fourth-quarter points for Wilkes-Barre Area, the Wolfpack fell against Pittston, 48-40, in WVC Division I play at the Den.
Lili Hintze hit three 3-pointers to lead Pittston with 12 points. Daniella Ranieli and Julia Long each added 11 in the victory. Jaida Underwood and Emily Barrouk combined for 31 of the Wolfpack’s 40 points.
Northwest Area 52, St. John Neumann 21: At Northwest, the Rangers held Neumann to just three points in the first half en route to a District 4 girls’ basketball win. Ashlyn Hermanofski scored a game-best 18 points, with four teammates scoring eight points each.
Bre Nixon paced Neumann with nine points. Girls swimming At Wyoming Area, the Warriors swept the relays and picked up a 130-53 home WVC win over Berwick. Ameriana Walker won the two free sprint races, while Ella McKernan took first in diving and 100 breast.
