One of the most historic rivalries in English football gets set to write a new chapter on Sunday, as Manchester City looks to keep its UEFA Champions League hopes alive against Manchester United. This rivalry dates back to 1881, and has seen many legendary battles between the English Premier League powers. United has the latest victory in the rivalry, beating City at Etihad for the first time since March 2021.
If ManU can pull out another win over their historic foes on Sunday, it would be a significant damper on the four-time defending league champions’ hopes of playing in the UCL next year. Coming into Sunday, City is fourth in the table, just one point ahead of fifth-place Newcastle. ManU is far from any European competition.
The Red Devils are 13th in the table, 12 points back of sixth place. Manchester United is 80-54-61 against their crosstown rivals, all-time. United has won two of the last three meetings, beating City in the FA Cup Final last May.
