Dreamworks recently dropped the first trailer of the live-action How To Train Your Dragon. The film, earlier revealed to be a remake of the original hit franchise is set to release in the coming year and one of the biggest concerns for fans was the live-action version of the iconic dragon Toothless. Every live-action series has been through its fair share of troubles with presenting a real version of the animated animal characters.
However, Dreamworks has chosen to remain true to the original version and fans are more than happy. The teaser is close to the animated film's original version with little to no changes. It is unclear how close the film will remain to the source material but the first look has fans impressed.
The remake made wit the commercial perspective has brought the ideal look and aesthetic of a Vikings tale. Berk, the island town they live on hasn't been revealed yet but it looks like every dreamy islandic location. Meanwhile, with the voice actors returning, its even big of a deal as the character look and sound almost exactly the same as the original despite the major changes.
From Hiccup to his father, many major characters have been revealed in the first teaser but the hero of the clip remains Toothless. The character design for the original was well thought of, and the live action version isn't a reimagined dragon but exactly the same one. pic.twitter.com/RvS3RINNav — Fandango (@Fandango) November 19, 2024 As How to Train Your Dragon's original director had assured fans that there will be a continuity between the original animated movie and the live action treatment given that Dean DeBlois.
And the teaser has proved the same to much relief for fans. The 2025 remake is set to be co-director and co-writer with Dean DeBlois. Many have taken to their social media comparing the two clips and the similarities has everyone esthetic.
Many films including Pokemon, Sonic and more have face the problem of turning non human characters too realistic and How To Train Your Dragon has avoided the same. However impressive the CGI is, it is bound to minimize the over expressiveness of the characters in the life action version. The same can already be noticed in the clips comparing the two films.
Toothless though is able to express his distrust in Hiccup in the first clip it isn't as expressive as the original but the familiarity with the original brings the emotions across for now. THIS CASTING IS SO ICONIC MASON THAMES THANK YOU pic.twitter.

com/SxYImI7L2Z — #HowToTrainYourDragon (@HTTYDragon) November 19, 2024 According the reports, the live action treatment is being called a remake and not a live action version of the original as Dean DeBlois had revealed the film will be his version of the franchise. With some changes in the story, characters and locations, it is unclear if the film will be able to make the same impact as the original hit franchise. Apart from Toothless, the trailer also gives a glimpse at other dragons flying through the nest including Monstrous Nightmare and Gronckle. They too have the same appearance as the animated film, but more promotional material will reveal if they are able to keep the other parts of the story and its emotional value for fans intact. Rewatching the original How to Train your Dragon, and man, there is no way the upcoming LA film will top the raw power of this scene.
The camera angles, the sense of momentum, the score. This entire sequence is one of the best in the history of western animation, and I'm serious pic.twitter.
