Prohibition took place between 1919 and late 1933, when the 18th Amendment banned the production, sale and distribution of alcohol. San Diego’s first-ever cannabis lounge opening for 4/20 weekendThe early years of the Great Depression also occurred during this time, leading the newly elected President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his administration to find a way to appease the public.
While waiting to legalize all forms of liquor, Roosevelt signed the Cullen-Harrison Act on March 22, 1933. Under the new law, which took effect April 7 that same year, people were again permitted to purchase and consume beer and wine in public.(Above: Watch the interview with Tap Truck, which offers mobile bar services year-round)With over 150 independent craft breweries, San Diego County is known as the "Capital of the Craft.
" A full list of breweries throughout the county can be found here on the San Diego Tourism Authority's website.In 1989, Karl Strauss Brewery was the first brewery to open in San Diego since Prohibition. Currently, it has four locations in San Diego County -- three in the city of San Diego and one in Carlsbad.
It has also expanded to other California locations in Temecula, Corona, Anaheim, Costa Mesa and downtown Los Angeles. It just recently launched its newest beer, "Nectaron of the Gods IPA," in collaboration with Pizza Port. Some other breweries in San Diego are commemorating National Beer Day with discounts.
For example, Societe Brewing is offering 20% draft and canned beers at both of its tasting rooms in Kearny Mesa and Old Town.Although beer can be enjoyed any day of the year, people are encouraged to use National Beer Day to support their local watering holes..
