As the colder months continue, houseplants can struggle with the cooler temperatures but one bathroom staple has been recommended by experts. The central heating creates a drier atmosphere for houseplants so they can struggle to thrive. Far less daylight in the winter months also presents challenges for plants but by using an affordable hack, homeowners can make sure their plants get a healthy boost.
Elise Harlock at Prestige Flowers recommended using Epsom salts to do this – here’s how you can make a difference with the bathroom staple. It’s an affordable tool that can ensure your home is a thriving, green oasis throughout the seasons.
“During winter, leaves often lose their colour due to less sunlight. Epsom salts can promote lush, green leaves by upping the magnesium levels. “If you notice yellowing leaves, this could indicate a magnesium deficiency.
Dissolve a teaspoon of Epsom salts in a jug or watering can and use this solution to water your plants once a month.” Sulfur is another key component of Epsom salts and it plays a vital role in root development which is essential for a plant’s nutrient uptake. How to care for your garden during winter “Stronger roots will help plants withstand seasonal stresses.
Simply sprinkling some Epsom salts around the base of the plant before watering thoroughly ensures the sulfur reaches the roots,” Elise explained. She added: “Certain plants, like poinsettia and Christmas cacti, bloom in colder months. The magnesium in Epsom salts supports the flower buds and ensures long-lasting, vibrant blooms.
“Magnesium also improves nutrient absorption. It ensures your plants get the most out of their soil including nitrogen and phosphorus, and if you use fertilisers, the Epsom salts can be a helpful addition to your care routine.” Central heating can be drying which can cause stress for tropical house plants that need humidity.
Elise added: “Epsom salts help mitigate some of the stress by improving plants’ overall health and resilience. “Whenever trying something new, it’s essential to start with a small amount tested on a small area. “Even if your plant reacts well, it’s important to not overdo it.
Excess magnesium can interfere with the uptake of calcium and potassium so stick to monthly applications. “But Epsom salts is a gentle solution which is suitable for most house plants and unlikely to harm plants when used in moderation. Adding it to your plant care arsenal can keep indoor greens fighting fit throughout winter.
