A talk on the history of the humble inn sign is the next event for Bolton’s lively branch of u3a (The University of the Third Age). The organisation is a registered charity of around 300 members and part of a UK-wide collection of 1,000 charities of people who no longer work full-time. They come together regularly to keep active, learn new things and have fun – from walking to talking, bowling to bridge and mindfulness to maths.

He has a life-long passion for history as a speaker to WI’s, Probus, u3a’s, churches and other charitable groups.

He stated: “Few people realise that 2,000 years of history is hanging over their heads and that the humble pub sign can hold the key to a town’s past. “Pubs were rarely named by accident but were inspired by religion, royalty, heroes and the occasional scandal.” His highly visual and entertaining talk, with a quiz, explains how inn signs originate and traces their development from the Romans to the present day.

Added Michael: “Having attended this talk, people will know how to read the signs and unlock the history of the inn sign and the travellers that took their rest and sustenance there.” To find out more about u3a in Bolton go to www.boltonu3a.
