WASHINGTON — Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin continues to get closer to breaking a historic record of goals scored. That record has not been broken in more than three decades. The current record holder of goals scored is Wayne Gretzky with 894 .
"The Great One" broke Gordie Howe's record of 801 in 1994 and later added another 93 goals before he retired in 1999. Ovechkin gets closer to breaking the record with each game and experts say he could surpass Gretzky this season. The record-breaking season hit a snag after 39-year-old Ovechkin broke his leg, causing him to miss 16 games.
