This article contains spoilers for The White Lotus. Depending on who you speak to, The White Lotus Season 3 has either been a boring dud or a masterful lesson in suspense and character building. Whatever side you fall on (I’m personally leaning towards the latter), it’s hard to deny that the series has been a little slower this time around.
More than that, it’s taken a while for viewers to settle on who they’re gunning for. Gaitok is cute, but he really shouldn’t be a security guard. Chelsea is fun, but all she talks about is Rick and astrology.
And you know I’d bat for Belinda, but she does spend a lot of time shaking her head while looking perturbed . Now, though, with the end in sight, an unexpected fan favorite appears has emerged out of left field. Yes, it is one of the blonde triangle—and yes, it is Laurie, played by Carrie Coon.
This 40-something divorced lawyer—who can neck two shots, isn’t averse to swigging beer ringside at a Muay Thai fight, and knows a hot hook-up when she sees one, even if it does result in some light extortion and a barefoot walk of shame—actually isn’t as insufferable as her friends. She’s the character you’d most want to go to the club with. And you know what, it was shady for Jaclyn to hook up with Valentin.
I’m not the only one rooting for Laurie this season. My TikTok FYP has been littered with fancams and “mommy” comments the past week or so, with no sign of slowing down. “This is a song for Carrie Coon, you look amazing, girl,” sings TikToker Jake Schroeder over some piano.
“And when you went to the fight, I was proud of you / For taking advantage of the whole damn world / Your friends are totally rude, like why would Jaclyn kiss that dude?” (“This is the only correct take,” reads one comment beneath. “She’s such a baddie,” reads another.) In another clip , with nearly 500k views, one TikToker says, “If you think that Laurie is the problem in The White Lotus and you’re taking Jaclyn or Kate’s side, please stay the hell away from me, okay?” You know a character is hitting when you start speaking about them like they’re a real person.
“They gaslit the hell out of Laurie, and Laurie responded in the only appropriate way,” he adds. It helps that Carrie Coon ( Gone Girl , The Gilded Age ) is a likeable force in real life. On X, the conservative public figure Meghan McCain recently came for Coon for “representing” a “progressive liberal” “who is sleeping with hotel staff and showing her tits to everyone.
” Though McCain meant this to be derogatory (by slut-shaming a fictional character), you can’t help but think that McCain just hammered the nail on this season’s fan fave. Because, really, what could be more first-rate than sleeping with hotel staff and showing your tits to everyone? I can only hope for so much myself. Though there is only one episode left, we are still no closer to knowing who emerges from The White Lotus hotel with their life intact.
In classic Mike White fashion, it’s very possible that the assailant(s) and victim(s) are those we haven’t even considered, with twists we won’t be able to predict. Either way, one thing is for certain: Laurie, please come out on top..
