The balance of power in Congress will not be changing after special elections to fill two house seats in Florida that Republicans won last November by more than 30 points. Political analyst Scott Spradling told News 9 that the elections in Wisconsin and Florida gave voters the opportunity to respond to the new presidential administration at the polls. The two open congressional seats formerly belonged to Republicans Matt Gaetz and Mike Walz.
The two Republican candidates, Randy Fine and Jimmy Patronis, are expected to win the special election . Spradling said that the projected victories for Republicans don't necessarily mean a complete loss for Democrats. "If they can keep it competitive and keep it close, they might be able to start to make a case that since Donald Trump took office, maybe even Republicans aren't as happy as they have been," Spradling said.
He said that the open Supreme Court judgeship in the battleground state of Wisconsin was the race to watch. >> Download the free WMUR app to get updates on the go: Apple | Google Play << Spradling said a state Supreme Court election doesn't typically draw this much attention, but Elon Musk's contributions raised the stakes. "He's pumping a lot of dollars into what otherwise would have been statewide races that might not have ever shown up on the radar," Spradling said.
"Big money and big donors in politics in America. It's nothing new. What is different is how unabashed and public Elon Musk is doing this.
" He said the Wisconsin race was a test to see if Democrats have the numbers to overcome that Republican enthusiasm. Maintaining a Democratic majority in the Wisconsin Supreme Court could have major implications on abortion rights in the state. "These issues that are core and critical issues to Democratic voters and issues that should be driving them in very large numbers to the polls," Spradling said.
According to Spradling, Democrats and Republicans will now look to exit polls to understand what motivated voters..
