KIRK Reynoldson played 125 NRL games, enjoyed three campaigns at the Knights and began his professional career coached by Craig Bellamy. Login or signup to continue reading The former rugby league forward returned to Newcastle for sporting commitments of a different kind on Friday. Reynoldson, through his digital app Eggy, has now joined forces with the Jets as a sponsor.
The business name will appear on the men's shorts for A-League fixtures throughout the rest of 2024-2025. Brisbane-born Reynoldson, 45 and based on the Gold Coast these days, explained why he crossed codes to team up with the city's flagship soccer club. "It's great to be back and I guess number one - Newcastle, grassroots," Reynoldson said.
"We were really excited at Team Eggy when the new ownership group [Maverick Sports Partners] reached out to us and spoke about Newcastle in general. "When we caught up face to face we were just pumped about the chat around grassroots, members, players, everything. "As a business that lives and dies on our community, that was number one for us.
" Reynoldson, well known for a big and bushy beard during his playing days, recorded 41 appearances for the Knights between 2005 and 2007. Either side he spent time at Melbourne (2002-2004) and St George Illawarra (2008). Reynoldson recalled his link to the Jets while previously in Newcastle and a more recent relationship to the round-ball game.
"I've always been in and around it," he said. "I don't know if anyone remembers the legend Dura, Andrew Durante. He was a legend of the game in Newcastle when I was here.
"But I'll go back to grassroots, my three kids all play soccer and footy. It was my son's birthday yesterday [Thursday] and he got a full Messi kit. "If that doesn't tell you how close to the game I am with soccer, that's pretty much where we're at.
"I've been to tournaments all year and if anyone can't see the participation rates of this game in this country, they're idiots. Reynoldson spoke to Jets pair Ryan Scott and Nathan Grimaldi ahead of Saturday's clash with Sydney FC at McDonald Jones Stadium. "Being a professional athlete transcends kind of everything, it doesn't matter what sport you play you can relate on so many fields," he said.
Reynoldson described Eggy as an "employee experience app" with a motto of "life's info in one place working for you". My name is Josh Callinan and I'm a sports journalist at the Newcastle Herald. I started with the newspaper in 2016 after a decade at the Maitland Mercury.
