The actress recently spoke about the moment on the Whine Down podcast, explaining that the announcement took her by surprise. She had no advance warning about Sheen’s decision to go public with his diagnosis.
Since the news spread quickly, Richards felt it was important to be the one to explain it to her children. She said, “I think I picked them up early from school that day because I didn’t want kids at school to tell them.” Richards admitted she was frustrated with Sheen for not telling her in advance.
“I wish he gave me a heads up, like, ‘Hey, I’m doing it today,’” she added.Richards described the conversation with her daughters as challenging, as they were still young at the time. Over the years, she has made an effort to keep them away from their father’s public controversies.
She stated, “There’s been a few things that I’ve had to have conversations with [them], but for the most part, I really tried to shelter them from a lot of stuff.”Richards and Sheen, who were married between 2002 and 2006, have maintained a cordial relationship. However, she wishes they were closer.
