Houston Grand Opera Reveals 2025-26 Studio Artists

Houston Grand Opera has announced its 2025-26 Sarah and Ernest Butler Houston Grand Opera Studio Artists.Among the first-year artists are tenor Luka Tsevelidze, who secured second place at HGO’s 2025 Eleanor McCollum Competition Concert of Arias, and baritone Geonho Lee, who claimed both first place and the Audience Choice award. Pianist and coach Tzu Kuang Tan also joins the program.

Returning Butler Studio artists include sopranos Alissa Goretsky and Elizabeth Hanje; tenors Michael McDermott, Shawn Roth, and Demetrious Sampson, Jr.; bass-baritone Sam Dhobhany; and bass Ziniu Zhao. Pianist and coach Jenny Choo also continues with the program.



“These emerging artists are possessed of an astounding level of talent,” said HGO General Director and CEO Khori Dastoor per an official press release. “All have demonstrated the potential for major, international careers in opera. Investing in the future of our art form by helping them to hone their extraordinary gifts is at the heart of what we do at HGO.

In the season to come, they will not only build upon the storied legacy of our Butler Studio program, but they will also bring joy and inspiration to thousands.”The residency has a duration of up to three years with the artists engaged in specialized instruction as well as opportunities for lead and supporting mainstage roles at the Wortham Theater. They will also appear in performances across Houston and throughout Texas.
