The Met Office is forecasting highs of up to 24C in the capital on Friday, with temperatures sitting well above the seasonal average. The warm weather is expected to continue into Saturday, although a shift is likely by the evening when cloud cover and light rain may move in. Sunday looks more unsettled, with cooler conditions and the possibility of scattered showers.
London Fire Brigade is urging people to take care outdoors, warning that the combination of dry conditions and sunshine creates a serious risk for grass and open land fires. Firefighters have already responded to an increase in incidents this month, with similar warnings in place across Scotland and Northern Ireland. Assistant commissioner Thomas Goodall said: “The risk of wildfires in London currently is heightened and this risk increases with every day that passes without rainfall.
What might seem like harmless fun has the ability to turn into something much more serious, particularly given current weather conditions.” The fire service is asking Londoners to avoid using disposable barbecues in parks and on balconies, and to dispose of rubbish and cigarettes responsibly. The Met Office says the current warm spell is being caused by a strong area of high pressure settled over much of the UK.
This system acts like a barrier, keeping clouds and rain at bay and allowing sunshine to dominate. According to meteorologist Dan Stroud, the average temperature for this time of year is around 13C, making Friday’s predicted highs around 10 degrees above normal in early April. Here is how the forecast is shaping up in London over the next three days, hour by hour.
