CRESAPTOWN — Heritage was all but unstoppable on the offensive end Tuesday. The only thing that prevented Heritage from eclipsing 100 points was good sportsmanship and a running clock, as the Eagles sunk 12 3-pointers en route to a 92-50 rout of Calvary. "Our defense didn't even show up tonight, but I'm not going to take anything away from them," Calvary head coach Steve Robinette said.
"That is a great team. The best thing to take away from tonight is putting up 50 points against them. Nobody in our conference has done that yet this year.
" Tuesday's matchup in Cresaptown was one between the top two squads in the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference. But Heritage proved to be on another level, scoring more than 30 points in two quarters and 25 in another to push its record to 20-2 overall and remain unbeaten in the MDCC at 9-0. Calvary fell to 8-8 overall and 5-4 in the league.
Heritage's Cody Dan led all scorers with 24 points, leading a pack of four double-digit performers that included Micah Wilson (17), Jackson Cline (15) and Noah Poe (15). "We were doing a great job getting out in transition, which allowed us some easy baskets, quick baskets," longtime Heritage head coach Mike Kidd said. "Could do a little better job defensively.
I think Calvary is progressing, and we might well see them again in the playoffs." Kidd is in his 28th season as Heritage's head coach and was an accomplished athlete in his own right. He was inducted into Bridgewater College's Hall of Fame in 2006 and is considered the school's greatest distance runner.
His team got out running Tuesday, jumping out to leads of 31-17 after the first quarter, 56-30 at the half and 87-45 after three periods. Heritage is 3-0 against squads from Allegany County this campaign after defeating Fort Hill, 61-45, and Allegany, 74-62, in Hagerstown in late December. "We've played Allegany and Fort Hill, and that's prepared us for some of these tougher games," Kidd said.
"This is the greatest number of public teams that we've played. (We beat) Smithsburg and South (Hagerstown). "It gives us a little bit more credibility maybe, for a small school.
" Much of Calvary's success this season has come through big man Geren Knight, but the Eagles' guard duo of Canyon Michael and Brady Morgan were the team's top performers Tuesday. Michael finished with a team-high 19 points, burying a pair of 3-pointers, and Morgan added 12. Nathan Strachan was third on the squad with eight.
Calvary offered little resistance on the other end, as its help defense on Heritage's dribble drive frequently left open shooters in the corners — something Heritage has in excess. Seven Heritage players made a 3-pointer, led by Wilson and Dan with a trio each. Heritage didn't play any of its starters in the fourth, though Calvary still elected to run the clock.
Calvary now turns to its most important game of the season when the Eagles host Grace Academy on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The winner earns the No.
2 seed and a first-round bye in the MDCC playoffs. "Friday is a do or die for us," Robinette said..
