New findings suggest that the classic bread sandwich is losing its appeal among Brits, who are increasingly favouring hot and flavourful alternatives such as toasties and quesadillas. A recent poll discovered that 25% of UK adults now consider bread sandwiches to be the most uninspiring lunch choice, with 16% actively opting for hot meals during the week. This trend is particularly noticeable among women, with a third finding bread sandwiches lacklustre.
Men, on the other hand, were equally unenthused by salads (28%). There's also a regional split in preferences, with Scotland and the North of England leading the preference for hot lunches - 19% of those surveyed in these regions favoured options like quesadillas. The survey, conducted by Mexican food chain Tortilla, also revealed that the age group most keen for a change in their lunchtime routine was the 45-54 bracket, with 31% confessing they've become bored with their daily sandwich habit.
In light of these results, Tortilla is determined to revolutionise how Brits approach lunch. On Thursday, December 12, the brand will introduce the Quesadilla 5000, a unique device designed to transform regular sandwiches into warm, cheesy quesadillas. The launch event will be held at Tortilla Greenwich, located opposite Cutty Sark Station in London, from 11am to 2pm, with TikTok sensation Tommy Solemn hosting the festivities.
Tortilla is offering a mouth-watering swap deal where visitors can exchange their shop-bought sandwiches for a complimentary quesadilla. In a generous move, the chain will be donating the collected sandwiches to local charities such as the Greenwich Homeless Project and the 999 Club. "Think of our quesadillas as Mexican toasties," quips Megan Burton-Brown, Marketing Director at Tortilla.
He adds: "They take the humble sandwich and make it exciting-less bread, more filling, melted cheese, fresh, customizable ingredients, and a dipping sauce. It's satisfaction you just can't get from a regular sarnie!" Adding to the festive cheer, Tortilla is rolling out a special Festive Quesadilla. This seasonal treat, featuring Somerset Camembert and Cranberry & Chipotle Salsa, is up for grabs in-store or through delivery partners Uber Eats and Just Eat.
