An expert has shared how to keep leftover hot cross buns from your Easter feast "soft and fluffy" for months with Express.co.uk.

With Easter coming up this week, hot cross buns have likely already made their way into many British households. Traditionally spiced and studded with currants or raisins, these iconic Easter treats are something many people are looking forward to. Supermarkets nowadays have shelves upon shelves lined with every variation — from zesty orange and cranberry to indulgent chocolate chip varieties.

However, this can also lead to overbuying and filling up the cupboard with packs of these fluffy buns. When this happens — or if you’re buying them too soon — you might end up with stale, unappetising buns that will likely end up in the bin before you even get to enjoy your Easter Sunday meal . That’s why Vlatka Lake, storage expert at Space Station, shared her method to keep them soft and fluffy like the first day “for months to come”.

Speaking exclusively with Express.co.uk, Vlatka said: “To keep your hot cross buns fresh for a couple of days, opt for an airtight container or a resealable bag.

“This will help limit exposure to air, which can lead to them drying out. “Make sure your container or bag is clean and dry before placing the buns inside and avoid overcrowding to prevent squashing them.” But if you’re thinking longer-term — and that’s well beyond the bank holiday weekend —Vlatka recommends turning to your freezer.

“If you're planning to enjoy your hot cross buns beyond a couple of days or want to stock up for once the Easter period is over, you may want to try freezing them,” she said. “This not only extends their shelf life, but it also helps lock in moisture, ensuring they remain soft and fluffy for months to come.” The secret lies in the prep, as not storing them correctly could lead to the buns absorbing smells or even freezer burn.

“Before placing them in the freezer, you should make sure to wrap each bun individually in cling film or foil, to prevent them from sticking together,” Vlatka added. “This means that when you come to defrost them you can defrost each bun individually, as opposed to having to thaw them all in one go.” So if you think you've bought more hot cross buns than you can eat over a long weekend, using this storage method might come in handy — and even give you a surprise later in the year when you're craving one.
